(DAYTONA BEACH, Florida) The Daytona Beach Symphony Society was presented with an early holiday gift at the Symphony Guild’s monthly meeting on Monday, December 2, 2013. As a result of the Guild’s successful Daytona’s Dancing with the Stars fundraising event held in November, the Symphony Guild has donated $20,000 to the Symphony Society for its YES! community outreach program. The check was presented by Joanne Larmon, Vice President of Fundraising for the Symphony Guild.
YES! (Youth Experiencing Symphony) targets at-risk students 6-18 years old, enrolled in Volusia County Title I schools and reaches over 3,000 students each year. A Title I school has at least 40% of its students at or below the national poverty level. The students experience 7-8 live performances each year. Immediately after the concert, opera or dance, students attend a personal question-and-answer period with the performers and have the opportunity to get autographs and personal encouragement. Teachers are supplied materials to prepare the students prior to the performance. In addition to providing complimentary tickets, the Symphony Society pays for bus transportation, school coordinators, and refreshments during intermission.
“I want to express my appreciation for the Daytona Beach Symphony Guild and their support of the DB Symphony Society and its “Y.E.S.” program,” said Shirley Okhovatian, Symphony Society President, accepting the check on behalf of the Symphony Society. “The DBSS Guild is an amazing and impressive group of hard-working individuals, and their recent “Dancing with the Stars” was a spectacular event! It was the largest fund-raising effort ever successfully completed by the Symphony Guild. Each committee member’s personal commitment was incredible throughout the preparations for the gala. Thank you for keeping the music playing in Daytona Beach!”
